Hawaii influences my art

Come on in!
Getting settled in, and getting to work. Come visit the studio! More pieces are on the walls, (about 50 still to put up,) and we are ready to play.
Sylvia Pippen brought over some of the hand applique and Hawaiian applique quilters for a nice lunch and show and tell. They do beautiful work , and the food was delicious. . Sylvia has a new top with many of her designs, and wants to learn to use my longarm, to quilt it. OK  When we both are actually on the island at the same time.

We will be getting together with a group of art quilters in Kona in early December. Maybe  expand our SAQA membership?

Circle of Life postcards
Another Innova is now living on the island, just 15 minutes away, and I am still meeting more nice people

I did finish my postcards for our circle of life themed exchange. Here are a few of them.  Israeli dancing seems to embody the spirit well, and I added quilting that shows movement and a bit of glittery paint to enhance the feeling of celebration. 25 cards sent out means I get that many different ones back, such fun

Pelican Express 2012

Waders 2011
Hawaii seems to have made my color choices even more vivid, if that's possible. Compare last year's birds for the snow goose festival with this year's wild pelicans!

Well, ok, last year's was pretty bright too. But I was already thinking about Hawaii
Back of Pelican Express
My new  Innova with lightening stitch works so well that I used contrasting thread in the bobbin to make a ghost image on the back, essentially a two sided quilt

I am still working on the heavily embellished piece shown here in progress. . All of the bits of fabric, thread, yarns, cords, ribbons, laces etc were added by longarm, composing right on the frame. I'll be adding beads, and flowers and buttons etc by hand now. Again, I think the colors of all of our bright tropical foliage are influencing me.

Off to California tomorrow for a few weeks with my favorite people. We can't think of any other reason to leave this paradise, but children and grandchildren still trump everything else. Happy Thanksgiving to all, and for those of you in Israel, please stay safe

  1. Love color. I love the colors of both the bird quilts. I'm working on getting my girls into coloring books and paints so I can experiment with color there. They have a 5 minute attention span, so I'm having fun coloring as fast as I can. It's actually pretty freeing and has unleashed some creativity. See you in late Jan!
